I grew up on the outskirts of Charleston, South Carolina, where I very early on began a life stemmed in drugs, alcohol, and violence. Like so many others who choose these roads, I did not do it blind and deaf to the call of God in my life, but did freely choose to separate myself from Him.
I was raised in a church-going home, and felt the presence of Jesus in my heart at a very young age. But once again, I chose to ignore that presence and chose to seek out the lust of the world, which would eventually send me to the penitentiary with little hope of getting out. But Halleluiah...God had a different plan.
It was after serving more than eight years behind those fences, when God convinced me that not only had He never left me, but He still had plans for my life. (Jer. 29:11 says "For I know My thoughts and plans for you says the Lord. To prosper you and not to harm you, to give you a future and a hope.")
I was so overwhelmed by God's presence and the surety of His love, that I embraced Him and His purpose for my life, with all my heart, soul, and mind.
Because of the way I had lived, those who knew me and those who would hear of me knew without a doubt, that my transformation was real. Only Jesus and Him alone could make me the new creation that I was. Because of what God had done in my heart, I soon became a spiritual leader within the prison system, and gave myself to the leading of the Holy Spirit in order to minister in the things God would have me to do.
I served an additional seven years after I opened my heart up to Jesus, in which time He used my circumstances and my service to make me and mold me and prepare me for life and service on the outside.
It was during these last seven years that the Holy Spirit began to fill me with songs of praise and testimony. As I began sharing these songs in our worship services, I was blessed to see the positive effect that they were having on people, and embraced this gift of song and poured myself into the studying of God's Word, with a passion and hunger that can only come from Jesus.
In August of 2001 I was released from prison to start a new journey in my walk with the Lord, and now I have the privilege of sharing the message of God's hope, mercy, and love, and the salvation of Jesus Christ.
Mine is a story of new beginnings, new heights, new lessons, and is in most ways no different than any other blood-bought born again Christian. I now have a wonderful, Holy Spirit filled wife and a beautiful young daughter, who are just some of the many blessings that God is pouring out in my life. My hope and prayer for every person, first and foremost is for their salvation, which comes only through Jesus Christ, and secondly, that each child of God will learn their rightful place within His Kingdom, and their true heritage as a child of the most high God.
I'm still writing songs for Jesus, and have been blessed to have the opportunity to share them with those that God has prepared to receive their message, and am still truly awed and humbled to see the difference that they have made in people's lives.
If I could teach the world one thing, it would be to never allow the powers of darkness to deceive you into believing that God has given up on you, even if you've given up on Him. He is there, His arms are still wide open, He has a purpose for your life, and He truly desires for you to know Him as a child knows a father.
May God bless you, keep you, and continually reveal His love to you. I love you in Christ Jesus.
